Learn What The Bible Says About The Creator

By Dick B.

The Creator of the heavens and the earth has revealed a great deal to us about Himself in His Word, the Bible (known in early A.A. as “the Good Book”). For example:

And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD [Yahweh] appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect (Gen. 17:1).

And God said unto him [Jacob]. I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. . . . (Gen. 35:11).

(Compare Bill Wilson’s statement that only God Almighty could cure the alcoholic’s form of lunacy: Dick B., The Akron Genesis of Alcoholics Anonymous, pp. 12-13):
Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker? (Job 4:17)

Thus saith the LORD [Yahweh], the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded (Isa. 45:11-12).

[Note the references in Alcoholics Anonymous, to our Maker, God (3rd ed., pp. 57, 63).]

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, . . . (Matt. 6:9).

But whosoever shall deny me before men [said Jesus], him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven (Matt. 10:33).

So then after the Lord [Jesus] had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God (Mark 16:19).

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few (Eccles. 5:2).

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God (Ps. 53:1-2).

The LORD [Yahweh] looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God (Ps. 14:2).

[Note the references to our Father which is in heaven in the last line of Dr. Bob’s story (Alcoholics Anonymous, 3rd ed., p. 181), and in Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, (p. 234).]

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? Or hath he spoken, and shall not make it good? (Num. 23:19).

And also the Strength of Israel [i.e., the Creator] will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent (1 Sam. 15:29).

For he [the Creator] is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment (Job 9:32).

I will not execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of thee: and I will not enter into the city (Hos. 11:9).

Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen (1 Tim. 1:17).

Who [the Father’s dear Son] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature (Col. 1:15).

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him (John 1:18).

He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love (1 John 4:8).

And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him (1 John 4:16).

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5).

Hear, O Israel: The LORD [Yahweh] our God is one LORD [Yahweh]: And thou shalt love the LORD [Yahweh] thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might (Deut. 6:4, 5).

And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he (Mark 12:28-32)

But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord [,] Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him (1 Cor. 8:6)

One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all (Eph. 4:6).

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Tim. 2:5).

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble (Jam. 2:19).

And [Solomon] said, O LORD [Yahweh] God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keepest covenant, and shewest mercy unto thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts (2 Chron. 6:14)

Thus saith the LORD [Yahweh] the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD [Yahweh] of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God (Isa. 44:6)

am the LORD [Yahweh], and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me (Isa. 45:5)

Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD [Yahweh]? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me (Isa. 45:21)

Yet I am the LORD [Yahweh] thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me (Hos. 13:4)

And God spake all these words, saying,

am the LORD [Yahweh] thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD [Yahweh] thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments (Exod. 20:1-6)

And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth (Exod. 23:13)

That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you: neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them (Josh. 23:7)
